Dr Maria Athanassiadou joined the Met Office Informatics Lab as a Scientific Systems Manager this summer. She is part of a team supporting Devon-based small business to develop and build their environmental/big data ideas.
She first joined the Met Office in 1998 with a background in Mathematics and a PhD in Meteorology. Her areas of expertise include gravity waves & complex flows around orography, wind tunnel measurements, atmospheric & dispersion modelling, and air quality. In recent years she has worked with satellite data to detect volcanic plumes and identify plant diseases from space.
